Genetic control of biochemical reactions in Neurospora.Proc. Nat. Acad. Sci. (U.S.A.), 27, 499-506, 1941.Beadle and Tatum proposed the "one gene, one enzyme" hypothesis in 1941. This was a restatement of ideas originally proposed by Archibald Garrod (No. 244.1) in 1908. Beadle and Tatum shared the Nobel Prize in 1958 with Joshua Lederberg (No. 255.4) for their researches on the mechanism by which the chromosomes in the cell nucleus transmit inherited characters.
